Phytotherapy

What Is PhytoTherapy?

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, Phytotherapy (also known as Herbalism) is “refers to using a plant’s seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark, or flowers for medicinal purposes.” Herbal therapies have been used for thousands of years, dating back to at least 3000 B.C. It is widely known known for it’s effectiveness.

How Does it Compare With Modern Medicine?

Interestingly, most modern medications have been derived from plants, seeds, leaves, flowers, roots, and berries found in nature. Chemists studied these herbal plants, extracted and then altered their active ingredients to create what we have come to know as allopathic, or mainstream medicine. It is estimated that about one fourth of pharmaceuticals have their origins in herbs. (UMMC)

Is There Proof That it Works?

It is estimated that around 80% of people worldwide use herbal preparations as a part of their healthcare. According to the World Health Organization, “600 to 700 plant-based medicines are available, and prescribed by some 70% of German physicians.
